Choose Colorbond roof colours by comparing the heat performance, the colours already on your house and the actual coating that will go on your roof. Surfmist is a useful starting point for a light finish, Shale Grey and Dune offer softer greys, and Woodland Grey or Monument give a darker look. For a roof restoration, the colour name alone does not tell you how the new paint will perform.

At R&R Restorations, we repair and recoat existing metal roofs across the Gold Coast, Brisbane, Logan, Tweed Heads and the Northern Rivers. We check whether the roof is sound before the new colour goes on.

## In summary

- Use BlueScope's colour chart to build a shortlist, then check a sample of the proposed roof coating. New steel and repaint colours are not the same product.
- Lighter roof finishes generally absorb less solar heat. Compare the actual coating's data, not just a familiar colour name.
- Match the parts of the house you are keeping: brickwork, gutters, fascia, window frames and garage door.
- A colour change does not fix rust or failed screws. Our metal roof restoration includes the preparation and agreed repairs before priming and recoating.

## What Colorbond roof colours are available?

BlueScope lists **22 core Colorbond colours**, with **six also available in a Matt finish**, on its [official colour chart](https://colorbond.com/colours), checked 28 October 2026. That is the range for factory-finished steel, not a list of every colour available in a roof repainting product.

The core colours are:

- Dover White, Surfmist, Southerly, Shale Grey, Bluegum and Windspray.
- Classic Cream, Paperbark, Evening Haze, Dune, Gully and Jasper.
- Wallaby, Basalt, Woodland Grey, Ironstone, Deep Ocean and Monument.
- Pale Eucalypt, Cottage Green, Manor Red and Night Sky.

Surfmist, Dune, Shale Grey, Bluegum, Basalt and Monument also appear in the factory Matt range. Make sure you are looking at the roofing range rather than the fencing chart, which has different options.

For your roof restoration, use these names to explain the look you want. Then confirm that colour in the coating proposed for your roof. A factory steel swatch is a reference, not proof of the final repaint's colour, texture or sheen.

## How do Surfmist, Shale Grey, Dune, Woodland Grey and Monument compare?

Surfmist is a soft white; Shale Grey is a light, warm grey; Dune has warmer, blush-toned colour; Woodland Grey is dark grey-green; and Monument is a deep grey. They differ in heat absorption as well as appearance, so compare both before settling on a colour.

| Colour | Look and materials to compare it with | Solar absorptance of new Classic-finish steel |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Surfmist | Soft white; pale walls, blonde timber and natural stone | 0.33 |
| Shale Grey | Light warm grey; grey brick, light render and darker timber | 0.44 |
| Dune | Warm neutral with blush tones; limestone and mid-tone timber | 0.48 |
| Woodland Grey | Dark grey-green; sandstone, slate, dark timber and leafy surroundings | 0.70 |
| Monument | Deep grey; white walls, rich timber and silver-grey finishes | 0.73 |

Source: [BlueScope's colours and finishes data](https://steel.com.au/resources/colours) and its individual colour descriptions. Thermal values published 23 August 2022; checked 28 October 2026. These are nominal values for **new Colorbond steel in Classic finish**, not measurements of an R&R roof repaint. Material pairings are starting points to test against your home, not rules.

Solar absorptance is the fraction of incoming solar energy a surface absorbs. A lower value means less solar energy absorbed. It is not a temperature reading or a percentage reduction in your electricity bill.

### Is Surfmist or Shale Grey the better choice?

Start with Surfmist if you want the roof to read closer to white. Start with Shale Grey if you want a visible grey without moving to a dark roof. Hold the samples beside your existing trim: a warm off-white roof and a crisp white fascia can look quite different together from how they appear separately.

### Is Dune grey or beige?

Dune is a warm neutral rather than a cool charcoal. BlueScope describes its warm, blush tones, so compare it with the undertones in your brickwork or stone before choosing it from a screen. If you are keeping cream trim or warm masonry, put Dune beside Shale Grey rather than assuming every grey will suit.

### Is Woodland Grey the same as Monument?

No. Woodland Grey has a grey-green tone, while Monument is a deeper grey. A sample that looks almost black indoors can show more of its undertone outside. For a repaint, compare the coating manufacturer's samples of both colours against the gutters you plan to keep.

## Will a lighter roof colour make your home cooler?

A lighter roof finish generally absorbs less solar heat than a darker one, which can help limit heat entering the roof space. It does not guarantee a particular indoor temperature: insulation, shade, ventilation and the house itself also affect comfort.

The Australian Government's [Your Home passive cooling guide](https://www.yourhome.gov.au/passive-design/passive-cooling), checked 28 October 2026, explains how light-coloured roofing and insulation help limit heat flow. For a Gold Coast or Brisbane homeowner already dealing with hot rooms, heat absorption deserves a place beside appearance in the colour decision.

There is a catch when you are repainting. The factory values in the table do **not** automatically apply to paint sold in a matching shade. Ask for the solar absorptance or solar reflectance data for the proposed coating and colour, if heat performance is a deciding factor.

Solar reflectance describes the proportion of solar energy a surface reflects. It is different from visible glare, so a roof's appearance alone cannot tell you its thermal performance.

BlueScope's [Thermatech information](https://colorbond.com/why-colorbond-steel/environment) describes solar-reflective technology in its factory product. Choosing a repaint called “Surfmist” or “Monument” does not establish that it has the same technology or thermal properties. A factory figure cannot tell you the temperature change to expect after a roof restoration.

## Will repainting reproduce the original Colorbond finish?

A repaint can change or refresh the colour, but it does not recreate the factory coating. Colorbond steel has a baked-on finish; a roof repaint uses a coating applied on site over the prepared surface.

[BlueScope's overpainting bulletin, TB-2](https://cdn.dcs.bluescope.com.au/download/tb-02), revised August 2022, explains that air-drying paints weather differently from the factory finish. It also states that there is no texture match for Colorbond steel in a Matt finish.

That matters when you keep an existing porch roof, gutter or section of unpainted factory steel next to the repainted roof. Even if the colour names match, the sheen and weathering can differ. A sample of the proposed coating is more useful than a promise that the name will produce an exact match.

Our [guide to painting a Colorbond roof](/blog/painting-colorbond-roof) covers the preparation and coating checks in detail. For choosing colour, keep these decisions separate:

| Decision | What to confirm |
| --- | --- |
| Colour | The coating manufacturer's colour name or code, checked against a physical sample |
| Finish | How glossy or matt the applied coating will look |
| Heat performance | Data for that coating and colour, rather than the original steel |
| Areas included | Whether the quote covers roof sheets only or any other surfaces you want changed |

## How do you choose a roof colour that suits your house?

Start with the materials you are not changing, then compare roof samples outdoors. A colour that suits a newly rendered display home may clash with the brickwork, garage door or gutters on yours.

Use this order before committing to your roof restoration:

1. **List what stays.** Note the brick or render colour, window frames, gutters, fascia and garage door. Include a porch or extension roof if it will stay its current colour.
2. **Choose the overall effect.** Decide whether you want a pale roof, a mid-tone roof or a dark contrast. That narrows the choice before you compare small differences between greys.
3. **Look at the whole house.** Stand back where you normally see it from the street. A large, visible roof has a different effect from one mostly hidden behind a parapet.
4. **Compare samples outside.** View them in sun and shade and at different times of day, alongside the existing surfaces. Do this safely from ground level, not by climbing onto the roof.
5. **Confirm the repaint product.** Move from the Colorbond reference to the actual coating's sample, finish and available colour before agreeing the work.

BlueScope's [design visualiser](https://colorbond.com/inspiration/visualiser) can help compare broad combinations. Use it to narrow the shortlist, not as a colour-accurate preview of your house or our finished work.

### What should you send us with your colour shortlist?

Send your suburb, the roof's current condition and the colours you are considering. Photos taken safely from the ground help show the roof alongside the finishes you want to keep.

You can copy this short brief into your enquiry:

> My roof is currently ____. I am considering ____ or ____. The gutters, fascia and garage door will stay ____. My main priority is appearance / reducing heat absorption / matching existing finishes. I have noticed ____. There is an adjoining roof section that will stay unchanged: yes / no.

This keeps the colour decision tied to the work. Our assessment checks the roof's material, condition, pitch and access; the quote then sets out the repairs, preparation and finish included. Mention any body corporate or estate colour requirements that apply to your property before settling on the finish.

## Does changing the colour change the roof restoration price?

The colour name alone cannot tell you the price. Roof size, access, condition, preparation and the specified coating all need to be considered. Our published guide is **$5,000 to $12,000 for a metal or Colorbond roof restoration**, not a fixed price for changing colour.

That range comes from our [metal and Colorbond roof restoration service page](/services/metal-roof-restoration-gold-coast), checked 28 October 2026. It covers a different job from spraying new colour over an unchecked roof: we clean, treat rust, replace failed screws, carry out the agreed sheet and flashing repairs, then prime and recoat.

Compare quotes using the same repair scope and finish. If you are comparing a standard coating with a specialist heat-reflective product, ask for the product and any price difference to be identified; do not assume either is included. Our [roof painting cost guide](/blog/roof-painting-cost) explains the wider cost factors.

## Is R&R Restorations right for your colour change?

We are a good fit if you have a sound but tired metal roof that needs repairs and a new finish in the Gold Coast, Brisbane, Logan, Tweed Heads or Northern Rivers area. We are owner-operated by Alex Rowe, and our metal roof restoration deals with rust, failed screws and worn roof details before recoating.

If you want new factory-finished Colorbond sheets with a particular factory texture, that is a different requirement from repainting your existing roof. Our roof restoration service should not be compared as though it supplies the same finish.

And if rust has eaten through much of the roof, a new colour is not the answer. We check the condition before quoting and tell you when replacing sheets or the roof needs considering. If cleaning or a focused repair is enough, that smaller job may be all you need.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I change a dark Colorbond roof to a light colour?

Yes, a sound roof can be prepared and recoated in a different colour. The coating system must suit the existing surface, and the required coverage must be achieved. We repair and prime before applying the new finish.

### What is the coolest colour in the comparison above?

Surfmist has the lowest published solar absorptance of the colours compared here for new Classic-finish steel. That does not establish the performance of a Surfmist-coloured repaint. Check the proposed coating's data.

### Should my roof and gutters be the same colour?

They can match or contrast. For a roof restoration, decide whether you are keeping the gutters as they are, then compare your roof sample against them. Do not assume a roof-coating quote includes repainting gutters or fascia.

### Can I choose a colour from an online chart?

Use an online chart to shortlist, not to make the final decision. BlueScope warns that screens and devices affect how colours appear. Check a physical sample of the product that will be applied.

### Can I match a faded Colorbond roof exactly?

Do not assume a new coating with the original colour name will match an aged roof. Fading, sheen and the different coating can affect the result. This is especially relevant if only part of the roof will be repainted.

### Will a new colour hide rust?

It may cover the appearance, but it will not repair corroded metal. Our metal roof restoration treats rust and replaces failed fixings before coating. Sheets that have rusted through need a repair or replacement decision first.
