Yes, you can paint a Colorbond roof if the sheets and roof structure are still sound. The job needs more than a new colour: the roof must be cleaned, rust and failed fixings dealt with, and a compatible coating applied to a properly prepared surface. Our published guide puts a complete metal or Colorbond roof restoration at **$5,000 to $12,000**, depending on the preparation and repairs needed. That is a whole-job guide, not a paint-only price.

At R&R Restorations, we treat [roof painting on the Gold Coast](/services/roof-painting-gold-coast) as the finish after the repairs. We also work across Brisbane, Logan, Tweed Heads and the Northern Rivers. If a roof only needs a focused repair, or is too far gone to coat, we say so before quoting a roof restoration.

## In summary

- A faded Colorbond roof can often be repainted. Rust holes and structural damage need a different answer.
- Cleaning, rust treatment, failed screw replacement and suitable priming matter more than choosing the colour first.
- Salt exposure on the Gold Coast and Tweed coast makes the condition of sheets, fixings and sheltered areas worth checking carefully.
- Our October 2026 published range is $5,000 to $12,000 for metal roof restoration. Compare the repairs and preparation in each quote, not just the total.

## When is painting a Colorbond roof worth it?

Painting a Colorbond roof is worth considering when the sheets remain sound but the finish is faded, chalky or worn. It is not a repair for steel that has rusted through, and a tired colour alone does not prove the roof needs replacing.

Colorbond is factory-painted steel. Its original finish is baked onto metallic-coated steel; a repaint is a new, air-dried coating over the prepared surface. [BlueScope's overpainting bulletin, TB-2](https://cdn.dcs.bluescope.com.au/download/tb-02), revised August 2022, confirms that Colorbond can be overpainted, but explains that the new paint weathers differently from the factory finish.

These are the decisions we need to settle before the colour goes on:

| Roof condition | Sensible next step | What paint cannot do |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Dirty roof with an otherwise sound finish | Assess whether cleaning is enough | Tell you what is underneath the dirt |
| Faded or chalky finish, sound sheets | Clean and prepare for recoating | Bond reliably to loose powder or grime |
| Surface rust around fixings or sheet edges | Treat the rust and repair the affected areas before coating | Replace lost metal |
| Loose screws, failed washers, lifted sheets or worn flashings | Repair the faults before painting | Secure a sheet or replace a failed seal |
| Rust holes across much of the roof or structural damage | Assess replacement rather than a repaint | Make weakened steel or a damaged structure sound |

Chalking is the powdery residue left as an old coating weathers. It is different from rust, which is corrosion of the steel. Both need attention, but they do not call for the same preparation.

Our [guide to roof restoration versus replacement](/blog/restore-or-replace-roof) covers the wider decision. We inspect the condition before recommending either path.

## What preparation does a Colorbond roof need before painting?

A Colorbond roof needs a clean, dry, stable surface and sound fixings before it is coated. Our metal roof restoration process is to clean and check the roof, treat rust, replace failed screws, refix lifted sheets, then prime and recoat it.

Use the stages below to understand the work in a quote. They are not instructions to climb onto the roof yourself.

### 1. Assess the sheets, existing paint and access

The assessment should distinguish the original factory finish from an earlier repaint. A previous coating that is peeling or poorly bonded needs attention before another coating can go over it. Adhesion means how firmly paint sticks to the surface beneath it.

Sheets, screws, sheet overlaps and flashings also need checking. Flashings are the metal pieces that keep water out at roof junctions and around penetrations. A leak near a flashing will not disappear because the surrounding sheet has fresh paint.

At R&R, roof condition, pitch, height and access all affect the scope and quote.

### 2. Clean away the material that stops paint bonding

Dirt, salt deposits, chalking, moss and loose paint must be removed. Cleaning also exposes faults that were harder to see beforehand. The roof then needs to be dry enough for the selected coating system.

Our service includes roof cleaning before coating. The cleaning method must suit the surface and the paint manufacturer's instructions; a pressure setting copied from another roof is not a specification for yours. Sound factory coating should not be stripped away unnecessarily.

### 3. Treat rust and fix the source of leaks

Loose corrosion needs removal and the remaining surface needs the treatment specified for the coating system. Rust treatment cannot rebuild a sheet that has lost its strength or developed holes.

We replace failed and rusted screws, refix lifted sheets and repair worn flashings as part of the agreed metal roof restoration scope. Ask whether a quote covers individual failed fixings or wider screw replacement. A leaking washer needs a fixing repair, not a dab of roof paint.

### 4. Match the primer to the actual surface

A primer is the preparatory coating that helps the finish bond to the roof; some primers also provide corrosion protection. Bare metal, treated rust, a sound factory finish and an old repaint can need different products.

Our published metal roof restoration service includes priming before recoating. The primer and finish need to work together, rather than being chosen separately because both tins say “metal”.

### 5. Apply the specified coating and check the finish

Coat thickness, coverage and drying conditions matter as well as the number of coats. Painting over damp areas or recoating before the product allows can undermine the work already done.

The product instructions set the application conditions and recoat times. We agree the weather and timing before work starts, then walk you through the finished roof and what was done. Ask for the coating system to be named in the scope so you know what you are comparing.

## What paint and primer should you use on Colorbond?

Use a roof coating system specified for the condition of the Colorbond, not general-purpose paint selected by colour alone. Acrylic roof membranes are one option. A roof membrane is a coating designed to form a protective film over the prepared roof surface.

There is no universal answer that every Colorbond roof needs an etch primer, or that every roof paint is self-priming. [Dulux's metal roof application guide](https://www.duluxtrade.com.au/technical-advice/application/roof-application-guides/roof-coating-system-for-metal-and-commercial-roofs/), checked 27 October 2026, separates new Colorbond, aged sound Colorbond, rust-affected metal and previously painted surfaces. Some of its specified systems for aged, sound Colorbond do not need a separate primer; other conditions do.

That does not change the priming stage in our published R&R service. It explains why a useful quote identifies the surface and the products, rather than promising that one primer works on everything. The Dulux guide is a technical example, not a claim that we use that brand on every roof.

BlueScope also recommends consulting the paint supplier about the application and environment, and advises against mixing primers and topcoats from different suppliers. If your roof collects drinking water, tell us before the quote: the paint supplier must confirm the proposed system is suitable, and tank isolation and reconnection need to follow its instructions.

## Does salt air change the job on the Gold Coast and Tweed coast?

Salt exposure makes corrosion and cleaning more important on coastal metal roofs. A faded roof near the beach needs checking for rust at screws, overlaps and edges, rather than assuming the problem is only the colour.

Our metal roof restoration service includes rust treatment and failed screw replacement. For a coastal property, ask the contractor to explain which areas are affected, whether the sheets remain sound and what preparation those areas need. A fresh finish does not remove salt trapped beneath it.

After the work, follow the new coating manufacturer's care instructions. BlueScope's [Colorbond maintenance guidance](https://colorbond.com/why-colorbond-steel/maintenance), checked 27 October 2026, makes a useful distinction: rain normally washes exposed roofing, while sheltered areas can collect contaminants. It recommends fresh-water washing of unwashed areas at least every **six months**, and more often where marine salt spray is prevalent.

That is not an instruction to pressure-clean a repainted roof every six months. Nor does rain mean gutters and sheltered areas can be ignored. Ask what maintenance suits your roof and arrange safe access rather than climbing up to inspect it yourself.

## How much does painting a Colorbond roof cost?

Our published guide puts a complete metal or Colorbond roof restoration at **$5,000 to $12,000**. That includes the preparation and repair work needed before recoating, rather than a price for spraying colour onto an unchecked roof.

Some roofs need much less work. We separate a focused repair from a whole-roof job:

| Scope | Published budget guide | What it means |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Metal or Colorbond roof restoration | $5,000 to $12,000 | Whole-roof cleaning, rust treatment, agreed fixing and sheet repairs, priming and recoating |
| Focused metal roof repair | $350 to $1,500 | A limited fault, such as failed screws or lifted sheets, where that is all the roof needs |

Source: our [metal and Colorbond roof restoration service guide](/services/metal-roof-restoration-gold-coast), checked 27 October 2026. These are Australian-dollar guides, not fixed offers. The final scope and price follow an assessment of your roof.

Roof area, pitch, height, access and the amount of preparation move the price. A sound roof with faded colour is a different job from the same-sized roof with failing paint, rust and multiple fixing faults. Our [roof painting cost guide](/blog/roof-painting-cost) explains the broader cost factors.

Before accepting a quote, check that it states:

- Which sheets, screws and flashings need attention, and which repairs are included.
- How rust, loose paint and chalking will be dealt with.
- The primer and finish proposed, with the required coating build.
- Access and safety arrangements, plus any rainwater-tank requirements.
- Exclusions, the GST treatment and how additional repairs would be agreed.

Our quotes set out the areas, repairs, preparation and finish included, with exclusions and possible changes made clear. “Paint roof” on its own tells you too little to compare the job.

## Is R&R Restorations right for your Colorbond roof?

We are a good fit if you want a sound but tired metal roof repaired and recoated across the Gold Coast, Brisbane, Logan, Tweed Heads or the Northern Rivers. We are owner-operated by Alex Rowe, and our work includes the rust and fixing repairs that need to happen before the colour goes on.

Rodney described the result on his roof in his Google review dated 22 April 2024:

> “turned my old rusty roof to look brand new”

That review appears on our metal roof restoration page. It is a real customer's description of the result, not a promise that every rusty roof can be saved.

We are not the right choice for a cosmetic spray over unresolved faults. If cleaning or a focused repair is enough, we can discuss that smaller scope. If rust has eaten through much of the roof or the structure has failed, repainting is the wrong spend; we will tell you that replacement needs considering.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I paint straight over Colorbond?

Not without preparing and checking the surface. Sound existing coating can remain where the chosen system allows it, but dirt, chalking, loose paint and rust need attention first. We clean and repair before priming and recoating.

### Can I paint a Colorbond roof myself?

It is technically possible, but we do not recommend treating it as a weekend painting job. Falls, fragile sheets and slippery surfaces are serious hazards. [WorkSafe Queensland's working-at-heights guidance](https://www.worksafe.qld.gov.au/safety-and-prevention/hazards/workplace-hazards/dangers-in-your-workplace/work-at-heights) puts preventing falls ahead of relying on personal protective equipment alone. You can send us photos taken safely from the ground to start the discussion.

### Can I change my Colorbond roof colour?

Yes. We recoat prepared metal roofs in the colour you choose. Check the coating supplier's sample and finish rather than assuming a matching colour name will reproduce the original factory texture and sheen.

### Will painting stop a Colorbond roof leaking?

Paint is not a substitute for fixing the leak. Failed screws, lifted sheets and worn flashings need repair before coating. Our metal roof restoration process addresses those faults first.

### How long does paint last on a Colorbond roof?

There is no reliable single lifespan for every repaint. Surface condition, preparation, the coating system, application and exposure all matter. Ask for the specified product's maintenance guidance rather than treating a general lifespan quoted online as a prediction for your roof.

### Is it cheaper to paint or replace a metal roof?

A roof restoration generally costs less than full replacement when the sheets and structure are sound. But coating badly corroded sheets is wasted money, even if its upfront price is lower. We assess whether the roof can be kept before recommending the work.

### Can you repaint a new Colorbond roof just to change the colour?

It can be done, but new and weathered surfaces need different preparation. Check the original product documents and BlueScope's overpainting advice before changing a sound new finish. Tell us whether the roof is newly installed or has been painted before when you enquire.

## Want to know whether your roof can be repainted?

Start with the condition of the roof, not a paint colour. [Request a Colorbond roof assessment and quote](/contact#quote) with your suburb, what you have noticed and any photos you can take safely from the ground. We will help you work out whether it needs a focused repair, a full roof restoration or a different approach.
